Shopping & Trips
Its best to do some food shopping before you arrive at Lletty.
There is a general grocery store in Llangadog which is fine for day to day items. Also in Llangadog you will find an award winning Post Office/Newsagent which has internet access; a butcher and 5 pubs.
Further afield in Llandovery you will find the usual general stores in town including Iechyd da health food shop, secondhand shops, pubs hotel, and slightly out of town a Somerfield.
In Llandeilo you will find several delicatessen, ice cream shops, tea shops and a few boutiques including Toast, several gift shops, pubs, a Co-op and CK’s supermarket, wine shop, and the Cawdor Hotel.
For a really big shop go to the Tesco Extra just outside Swansea on the A483 at Fforestfach where you will find all those high street store like Borders and Marks and Spenser you have been trying to get away from.
For a fancy dinner try the Angel Inn at Salem (01558 823394) the Cawdor Hotel (0800 9883002) in Llandeilo or The Fig Tree (01558 668187) at Llanarthne 5 miles West of Llandeilo.
The Red Lion in Llangadog (01550 777357) has good local food and is more relaxed, closer and cheaper and a better idea is you have children.
We have not eaten in the other Llangadog pubs for some time so cannot vouch for the quality. Other pubs in the area can be a bit hit and miss.
There is a tiny pub owned by the National Trust the Cwmdu Inn (01550 685088) with erratic opening hours in Cwmdu (north of Salem) which has a curry night at the weekend, however we have never made it.
In Cilycwm on the way to Lynn Brianne reservoir there is the Neuadd Fawr Arms (01550 721 644) which has good local food and often has freshly caught fish.
Aberglasney House (01558 668998) is good for lunch, but you have to pay for entry to the house and gardens.
If you do not want to drive and need to get a Taxi phone Llangadog cars (01550 777924 or 07763 423800) and arrange to meet them at the gate.
Trips we love to do from here on a regular basis
Beaches: Pembery Sands about 1 hour drive away, fantastic windswept ex MoD site with sand dunes and pine forests to the sea.
Mewslade Bay on the Gower about an hour and a half away, our favourite beach for body boarding, check the tide times first though, there’s no beach if the tides in.
Swimming in the Sawdde River at the bottom of the track. (Disappear through hedge opposite and turn left, you’ll come to a swimming pool with a ‘beach’. Not for the faint hearted.)
Hill walking – anywhere opposite. Go to the bottom of the track and turn right and either drive towards Brynamen or take a left at the 3 horseshoes and head for Llandeusant for Lynn y van Fach and Fawr.
Mountain biking – just do it around the forestry tracks straight out the door, or head to the Usk reservoir and cycle around the track there. There is also an excellent purpose built trail in Abergorlech 4 miles east of Brechfa.
The Red Lion is good and the best place to eat in Llangadog.
In the summer there is a very good Italian ice cream van that parks in the car park by the old quarry workings on the mountain opposite when the weather is good. Use binoculars if you have them to check.
There is a red kite feeding station by the Cross Inn on the way to the Usk reservoir. They are fed meat every day at the same time.
Antique shops in Llandeilo and Trecastle.
Lynn Brianne reservoir.
Garn Goch (Red Cairn) Iron age hillfort. Go up the hill behind the house to the top of the ridge and follow the footpaths down the other side to the fort. A good day out walk destination from the house. Take a picnic.
